Blueberries: The 3 Season Plant

April 1, 2011 / News and Notes, Fall, Spring, Summer / Wagners Greenhouse

Blueberries are a delicious, edible choice for your yard!

A delicious, edible choice for your yard!

Have you thought about blueberries? They sprout beautiful flowers in the spring, a bounty of fruit in the summer, and lovely colored leaves in the fall. The fruit is packed with antioxidants, kids love them, and they add all season interest to the garden. Blueberries come in different growth habits that may enhance any space, from small bushes to 6 feet tall varieties. Chippewa, a 3′ to 6′ bush, is noted for white flower clusters in spring, delicious large berries, and good fall color. They even bring cane colors of yellow, pink, and chartreuse to your winter landscape.

Polaris is an introduction by the University of Minnesota that resists the cold and snow of the North. It is a bushy plant, reaching 3′ to 4′, bright green in spring and red in the fall. You can even grow the smaller varieties, “Northcountry” or “Northsky,” in pots to pick berries off your deck or patio! Blueberries are a great choice, low maintenance and easy care for your garden. Besides, they are just plain healthy and fun! How can you lose?

Happy planting and eating!
