The Thriller, Spiller, and Filler

April 1, 2012 / News and Notes / Wagners Greenhouse

Flower Bed in Windowsill

This weather is really getting everyone itchin’ to get out in the dirt. However, we still have a little while until the ground warms up, so use that energy to start planning your mixed containers for your deck or patio. It is fun to design new combos and colors, and when the time comes to start planting, you know what to look for.

While planning, consider compatible growth habits of the plants and the light and shadow needed for each. But outside of the specifics, think of each container like you’re throwing a party. As with every good party, you need to invite a variety of guests, so when it comes to choosing the right plants for your containers you’ll need a thriller, a spiller, and a filler.

Your thriller is like the life of the party. This is usually a tall, spunky plant that has a lot of character and adds interest to your arrangement. A spiller rounds out your combination, adds a little drama to the bunch and spills out the edges of your container. Finally your filler can be anything pretty to fill in the rest of the space and mingles well with the rest of your plants.

Sounds like a good party and an even better container! Now isn’t that easy? Of course, if you need more help, we are always happy to plant the containers for you or suggest ideas.

Otherwise, let the countdown begin for the gardening season! Hope to see you soon!
